The Yap State Hospital, completed in 1979, has 150 beds and a staff of seven doctors and one surgeon. The public Health Division is responsible for health promotion and disease prevention activities and clinics in Yap State. The Public Health Division also works in the school system to irnmunize the youth of Yap State. There are twelve dispensaries and aid posts on Yap proper, and eighteen in the Outer Islands. Each island in the Outer Islands also has a health assistant who has successfully completed professional training, and is qualified to handle basic health needs and provide emergency care until arrangements can be made to transport patients to Yap proper. Yap State Hospital does not have an intensive care ward and some types of operations and serious ailments have to be treated off-island. In emergency situations, PMA planes transport patients to Guam for treatment.
